(Shutterstock) [March 23, 2022] (Reported by reporter Chen An) On March 21 (Monday), Walmart Canada President and CEO Horacio Barbeito (Horacio Barbeito) and Alberta Jason Kenney announced that Walmart will build a new distribution center in Calgary.
Walmart is investing $118 million in a new 430,000-square-foot distribution center that will expand the company’s transportation operations.
The facility, which will open in September, will serve as the main distribution center for Walmart’s Western Canada operations, handling millions of items each year.
Barberto said the new center will help Walmart get products to customers faster by using robotics that aren’t meant to replace workers but to make their jobs easier.
“We have customers [shopping] in stores. We have customers who order online. These robotic facilities need to serve the intersection of physical and digital,” Barberto said.
According to Walmart Canada, the facility will provide more than 300 direct jobs.
Barberto said employee compensation will be “maintained at or above market levels.”
He also noted that Walmart will continue to focus on building more of these distribution centers due to the influx of online shopping brought on by the pandemic.
Alberta Economy Minister Doug Schweitzer said industrial real estate projects like this will stay in Alberta.
“When it comes to logistics, warehousing and manufacturing opportunities, we have affordable real estate and an affordable cost of living that makes these facilities well-positioned to grow in Alberta,” Schweitzer said.
“We have the opportunity to be the venue for all events in the Port of Vancouver and Prince Rupert.”
