HANOI – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its forecast for Indonesia’s economic growth in 2022 to 5.4 percent from 5.6 percent previously.

The IMF’s economic growth forecast released on March 23 was lowered to 5.4% from 5.6%. The IMF did not explain why it lowered its growth forecast for Indonesia. The IMF kept its 2023 economic growth forecast for Indonesia unchanged at 6 percent in its January report.

Nonetheless, the IMF spoke highly of the Indonesian government’s efforts to deal with the new variant of Omikron and its economic recovery over the past period. The IMF also advised Bank Indonesia (BI) to stop buying bonds in the primary market to reduce the interest cost of government debt.

On the same day, Bank Indonesia confirmed that it will continue to optimize financial policies to maintain national stability and achieve national economic recovery. The IMF’s recommendations and economic growth forecasts are in line with Bank Indonesia’s policy. (over)
